425HP/454 HO GM Performance Parts Crate Engine Assembly
The 454 HO from GM Performance Parts offers tremendous value in a big block engine. Based on the Gen VI block, this is a great choice for your muscle car. Replacing rare matching numbered 396, 427 or 454 engines with H0 lets you drive your car with today"s fuels without fear of destroying your classic engine. The Gen VI block has a provision for a mechanical fuel pump if needed.
Note; the GM oil pan will not clear the Camaro or Chevelle chassis, SDPC offers several different oil pan kits to fit your particular application. A different oil pan can be installed at our facility prior to shipping for a small additional charge.

| I installed my 454 in a 1965 corvette. I have continuously experienced serious oil consumption. 1.5 qts. in 800 miles. I thought it was me. Then checked operating temperatures and found i was overheating. I resolved that, and she still drank oil. The power is also down. |

| A 454 will use 1 quart every 500 to 1000 miles... mine did !
I drove my Dad's 1975 Suburban back in the day..1977.
It had an LS-5 cam and a single plane intake from Chevy !
1 ton with a 5.13:1.0 rear gear
Yeah... 8mpg at 50 w/ the cruise on ! Didn't smoke. It used oil ! |

| I laso need that oil tanker. My story is the same as oil tanker. I will probably change the rings also. This engine is in a restored 1965 Corvette that is daily driven. Oil consumption is aproximately 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. It seemed excessive, but, I chalked it up to a not yet broekn in motor. I realize i am wrong. I almost want to replace it with my 396 again! |

I could have bought 2 motors for $ used on this mo, |

| I dropped this motor in my '70 El Camino, to replace a worn out 396. The oil consumption issue was the same as " Need an oil tanker". It took 2 yrs. to figure out what was up: "low tension oil rings" similar to race car rings. GM was tight lipped the whole time. I ended up tearing down the motor and lightly honeing the cylinders & re-ringing the pistons. I also added Edelbrock oval port heads & air gap manfold. The cam in this motor is a great street cam, so i left it alone. The car is a real pleasure to drive now, easy to work on, & very dependable. I would think twice about buying any GM crate product unless I re-rung the pistons. Maybe a short block. |
