Hot Rod Magazines' Crate Motor Shootout

Hot Rod Magazines Crate Motor Camparo answers all the performance questions you had about GM Performance Parts crate engines. The idea was to take a truckload of popular GM Performance Parts Crate Engines and race-test each one of them all in the same car, at the same time, on the same track.

The list of engines was narrowed from an unworkable amount of over 20 crate engines down to a manageable eight. These eight GMPP Crate Engines cover a range of engines straight out of the GM Performance Parts catalog from two traditional small block Chevy crate engines, two big block Chevy crate engines and four LS series crate engines.

Over a period of four days a team of welders, fabricators and machinists - put together by GM Performance Parts' Mike Copeland hit the track with a trailer full of crate engines and the GMPP Test mule '69 Chevelle. The all steel car (except for the lift-off fiberglass hood and plastic front bumper) is fitted with a 10 point roll cage and 10.5" tires.

The Crate Engines tested in the Hot Rod Crate Motor Shootout are listed below along with performance results. See the October 2008 issue of Hot Rod magazine for the full story.
